January 25th, 1862: The battalion is organized with four (4) companies as the Twelfth (12th) South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Battalion, sometimes referred to as the Fourth (4th) Squadron or Emanuel's Squadron, under the command of Major William P. Emanuel of Marlboro District.
January 25th, 1862: The Chesterfield Light Dragoons are mustered into service as Company A at Georgetown, South Carolina.
February 3rd, 1862: The Williamsburg Light Dragoons are mustered into service as Company B at Georgetown, South Carolina.
February 3rd, 1862: The E.M. Dragoons are mustered into service as Company D at Georgetown, South Carolina.
February 4th, 1862: Emanuel's Company is mustered into service as Company C at Georgetown, South Carolina.
January to December 1862: Served in the defense of Coastal South Carolina.
August 14th, 1862: Company's C & D are engaged in the action against Federal gunboats in the Black River, South Carolina.
August 31st, 1862: The Waccamaw Light Artillery, South Carolina Volunteers, is temporarily attached to the battalion.
December 12th, 1862: Per Special Order No. 254, Department of South Carolina, Georgia & Florida, the Battalion is consolidated with the 10th South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Battalion and the independent companies of Captain's Rutledge (Charleston Light Dragoons) and Pinckney (St. James Mounted Riflemen), to form the 4th South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Regiment.
Company A (Chesterfield Light Dragoons) is designated as Company A of the 4th Cavalry Regiment.
Company B (Williamsburg Light Dragoons) is designated as Company I of the 4th Cavalry Regiment.
Company C is designated as Company E of the 4th Cavalry Regiment.
Company D (E.M. Dragoons) is designated as Company F of the 4th Cavalry Regiment.
