The following historical information is about the service of both the battalion, and the men, of the Tenth (10th) South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Battalion, which served in the American Civil War from January 19th to December 16th, 1862.   BATTALION TIMELINE

 
January 19th, 1862: The battalion is organized with four (4) companies at Camp Hampton near Columbia, South Carolina, for local and coastal defense for the period of twelve months service; it was designated as the Third (3rd) Cavalry Battalion, South Carolina Volunteers, however is sometimes referred to as the Second (2nd) Cavalry Battalion. The Catawba Rangers are designated as Company A, the Calhoun Troop are designated as Company B, the Palmetto Rangers are designated as Company C and the Evans Light Dragoons are designated as Company D.

January 21st, 1862: Battalion officer elections are held, James Pickens Adams is elected as Major of the Battalion, having previously served as Colonel of the 5th Cavalry Regiment of South Carolina Militia.

May 6th, 1862: The battalion is reorganized per the April 21st Act of the Confederate Congress, the companies are re-lettered and officers are re-elected. Captain William Stokes of the Evans Light Dragoons is elected as Major of the Battalion. Company A (Catawba Rangers) is re-designated as Company D, Company B (Calhoun Troop) is re-designated as Company B, Company C (Palmetto Rangers) is re-designated as Company A and Company D (Evans Light Dragoons) is re-designated as Company C.

August 13th, 1862: Engaged at Black River, South Carolina.

September 10th, 1862: The battalion is re-designated as the Tenth (10th) Cavalry Battalion, South Carolina Volunteers.

October 22nd, 1862: Engaged at Pocotaligo, South Carolina.

December 12th, 1862: Per Special Order No. 254, Department of South Carolina, Georgia & Florida, the Battalion is consolidated with the 12th South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Battalion and the independent companies of Captain's Rutledge (Charleston Light Dragoons) and Pinckney (St. James Mounted Riflemen), to form the 4th South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. Company A becomes Company B, Company B becomes Company C, Company C becomes Company G and Company D becomes Company H of the 4th Cavalry Regiment.
