South Carolina Volunteers, 1860 to 1866
 

The South Carolina Volunteers Database was created in 2022 by the "Palmetto Riflemen & New York Zouaves" for the purpose of preserving the memory of the Soldiers, Sailors, Marines & Civilians of the State of South Carolina who lived through the American Civil War from December 1860 to July 1866.

While normally associated with the Confederate States, this site is dedicated to preserving the memories all of the men and women of South Carolina from 1860 to 1866, both in and out of the military forces of the United & Confederate States.

These people are linked together and shared a common history and story, and it is hoped that the information presented on this site will further both interest and

information in regards to the people of South Carolina during the 1860's. If you have any additional information, corrections, or questions, please contact the Webmaster.


CONTENT

The information on this site is divided into sections to make searching for units, branches, soldiers, etc., easier for visitors to the site. The following are those sections:

  • General Officers & Organizations. Information about the brigades and other larger organizations that were composed of South Carolina Volunteers; along with information about those South Carolinians who served as General Officers during the War.
  • Artillery. Information about the men that manned the various artillery pieces both in the field and in fortifications. With histories, rosters, etc., of the various Artillery Regiments, Battalions, Batteries and Soldiers from South Carolina.
  • Cavalry. Information about the men and units that served on horseback, or dismounted, in the field and garrison. With histories and rosters of the various Regiments, Battalions, Companies and Soldiers the State.
  • Infantry. Information about the men and units that served on foot in the field and garrison. With histories and rosters of the various Regiments, Battalions, Companies and Soldiers the State.
  • State Militia. Information on the Antebellum and Wartime Militia of the State of South Carolina, as well as the State Troops, Local Defense Troops and Senior & Junior Reserves organized during the War. Covering the organization, units, soldiers, etc., who served from the State.
  • Naval & Marine. Information about the Sailors, Marines, Ships and Stations both from the State, and that served in, or from, South Carolina.
  • U.S. Volunteers. Information about those South Carolinians and Units that served with the United States Armed Forces during the War. With histories and rosters of those Regiments, Companies and Volunteers from the State.
  • Post War. Information regarding the United Confederate Veterans, Grand Army of the Republic, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Women's Relif Corps, Monuments, Memorials, Historic Sites, Museums, and other post-war items related to South Carolina.
  • Resources. Information about the various historical publications, letters, diaries, documents and other materials relevant to South Carolina Soldiers, Sailors & Citizens from 1860 to 1866.

When searching for any particular soldier, sailor, marine, civilian, etc., on this site, keep in mind when that the spellings of some names have changed or been misspelled in the original records, and as the record was transcribed, take into account human error.
