ORDNANCE DEPARTMENT

The Ordnance Department oversees all details of the production, issues, and care of ordnance, arms and ammunition. The Department was staffed by Ordnance Officers and Ordnance Sergeants who were part of the Ordnance Department of the Army, and not part of any Regimental structure; the Ordnance Sergeant's being attached to the post where they were stationed. Within a Federal regiment the duties of the Ordnance Officer would often fall to the Regimental Quartermaster or Company Commanders, in the Confederate Regiments there often does appear a regimental Ordnance Sergeant who was tasked with these duties in addition to the Regimental Quartermaster or Company Commanders.

In the Palmetto Riflemen & New York Zouaves, the duties of the Ordnance Department fall on several, the First Sergeant oversees the inspection and care of the arms (rifles and bayonets), the Company Clerk handles the ordering of black powder and percussion caps for the members, while the Corporal's ensure that all those falling into line have sufficient ammunition. These articles have been gathered from a wide variety of sources, reenactors, etc., and are shared here to help better understand and provide insights for an accurate interpretation of the arms, equipment, and care of them in the 1860's.
