The following historical information is about the service of both the regiment, and the men, of the Ninth (9th) South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Battalion, also known as the "Pee Dee Battalion or Smith's Battalion, which served in the American Civil War from January 1st to September 9th, 1862. June 1862 - James Island, 1st Military District of South Carolina, Department of South Carolina, Georgia & Florida
July to September 1862 - 2nd Military District of South Carolina, Department of South Carolina, Georgia & Florida
January to March 1862: The battalion is organized from elements of the Harllee Legion of South Carolina State Troops, largely from the men of Nesbit's Battalion.
January 1st, 1862: Allston's Company (Company D) is mustered into Confederate service at Georgetown, South Carolina, for twelve months' service.
January 27th, 1862: Smart's (Company A), Graham's (Company E), Rollin's (Company F) & Granger's (Company G) Companies are mustered into Confederate service at Camp Lookout on Waccamaw Neck, South Carolina, for twelve months' service.
March 19th, 1862: Evans' (Company B) & Smith's (Company C) Companies are mustered into Confederate service at Camp Lookout on Waccamaw Neck, South Carolina, for twelve months' service.
March 24th, 1862: The battalion is officially organized with seven (7) companies at Camp Lookout on the Waccamaw Neck, South Carolina, and is mustered into service as the Ninth (9th) South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Battalion, for twelve months' service.
April 20th, 1862: The battalion moves from Waccamaw Neck to Camp Gist near Magnolia, South Carolina, arriving there on April 25th.
April to September 1862: Served in the defense of Coastal South Carolina.
June 16th, 1862: Engaged in the battle at Fort Lamar near Secessionville, South Carolina. The battalion suffered the loss of three (3) killed, twenty-three (23) wounded and three (3) missing in action for a total of twenty-nine (29) losses.
May 5th, 1862: The battalion is reorganized for the duration of the war at Camp Gist, South Carolina.
September 9th, 1862: The battalion is consolidated with the Sixth (6th) Infantry Battalion and designated as the Twenty-Sixth (26th) South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment at Church Flats, South Carolina.
Company A is designated as Company A of the 26th Infantry Regiment
Company B is designated as Company B of the 26th Infantry Regiment
Company C is designated as Company D of the 26th Infantry Regiment
Company D is designated as Company E of the 26th Infantry Regiment
Company E is designated as Company F of the 26th Infantry Regiment
Company F is designated as Company G of the 26th Infantry Regiment
Company G is designated as Company K of the 26th Infantry Regiment
