May to July 1862 – Cavalry Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia
July to August 1862 - Hampton's Brigade, Cavalry Division, Army of Northern Virginia
June 12th, 1861: The battalion is organized with four (4) companies as the Cavalry Battalion of Hampton's Legion of South Carolina Volunteers, at Camp Hampton in Columbia, South Carolina, under the command of Major Matthew Calbraith Butler of Edgefield District.
June to July 1861: Served in the Manassas Campaign (Virginia).
July 21st, 1861: Engaged at Manassas, Virginia.
April 28th, 1862: The battalion is reorganized for the duration of the War.
April to July 1862: Served in the Peninsula Campaign (Virginia).
April 5th to May 4th, 1862: Seved at the siege of Yorktown, Virginia.
May 4th, 1862: Engaged at Williamsburg, Virginia.
June 25th to July 1st, 1862: Engaged at the Seven Days, Virginia.
August 22nd, 1862: The battalion is consolidated with the Fourth (4th) South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Battalion, the Bonham Light Dragoons, and Boykins Mounted Rangers and reorganized as the Second (2nd) South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Regiment.
Company A (Edgefield Hussars) is designated as Company I of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment.
Company B (Brooks Troop) is designated as Company K of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment.
Company C (Beaufort District Troop) is designated as Company B of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment.
Company D (Congaree Troop) is designated as Company H of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment.
