June to July 1862: (Detachment) 4th Military District of South Carolina, Department of South Carolina, Georgia & Florida
May 30th, 1862: The battalion is organized with seven companies as the Eighth (8th) South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Battalion, also known as Jenkins/Colcock's Squadron or the Third (3rd) Cavalry Battalion. Four of the companies (Marions Men of Combahee, Calhoun Mounted Men, Savannah River Guards and Colleton Rangers) are reorganized from the old First (1st) South Carolina Mounted Militia Regiment, and three are newly organized companies (Ashley Dragoons, Barnwell Dragoons, and Beaufort District Troop).
May to July 1862: Served on duty along Coastal South Carolina.
July 19th, 1862: With the addition of three companies (Rebel Troop, St. Peter Guards, and ) the battalion is reorganized as the Third (3rd) South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Regiment.
Ashley Dragoons is designated as Company H of the 3rd Cavalry Regiment
Marion's Men of Combahee is designated as Company A of the 3rd Cavalry Regiment
Barnwell Dragoons is designated as Company D of the 3rd Cavalry Regiment
Calhoun Minute Men is designated as Company E of the 3rd Cavalry Regiment
Savannah River Guards is designated as Company K of the 3rd Cavalry Regiment
Beaufort District Troop is designated as Company C of the 3rd Cavalry Regiment
Colleton Rangers is designated as Company B of the 3rd Cavalry Regiment
