Enrolled and was mustered into service as Second Lieutenant of the 4th Independent Battery, New York Volunteers, on August 12th, 1863, at Washington, D.C., with rank from April 13th, 1863; transferred to Company L of the 1st New York Volunteer Engineer Regiment on December 12th, 1863; commanding the company from January 1st to April 22nd, 1864; on detached service from April 22nd, 1864; honorably discharged to accept a commission on May 22nd, 1864, at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Enrolled on May 23rd, 1864, at Hilton Head, South Carolina, for three years' service; mustered into service as First Lieutenant of Battery G of the 2nd Light Artillery Regiment, United States Colored Troops, on May 23rd, 1864, at Hilton Head, South Carolina; promoted to Captain on June 26th, 1864, to rank from June 8th, 1864; absent on a twenty-days leave of absence from August 4th, 1864, as a result of disability resulting from malarial fever; absent without leave from August 25th, 1864; returned to duty on September 10th, 1864; mustered out of service with the battery on August 12th, 1865, at Hilton Head, South Carolina. Enrolled and was mustered into service as Second Lieutenant of Battery H of the 2nd Light Artillery Regiment, United States Colored Troops, on May 24th, 1864, at Hilton Head, South Carolina, for three years' service; detailed as the Acting Ordnance Officer in Beaufort, South Carolina, from June 15th, 1864, to July 1865; promoted to First Lieutenant of Battery G on June 20th, 1864, with rank from June 19th; commanding the battery from August 18th to September 10th, 1864; absent on a thirty-days leave of absence from May 29th, 1865, for the purpose of attending to personal business in Rock County, Wisconsin; absent without leave from June 29th, 1865, having overstayed his furlough; tendered his resignation, which was accepted, and he was honorably discharged from the service on July 7th, 1865.     Morrel, Alonzo: Enlisted on April 28th, 1864, at Hilton Head, South Carolina, for three years' service, at the time of his enlistment he was described as being 20 years of age, was 5 ft. 7 in. tall, of a black complexion, with black eyes, black hair, was employed as a laborer and was illiterate; mustered into service as a Private in a detachment of the regiment on April 30th, 1864, at Hilton Head, South Carolina; no further record – was not taken upon the roll of the regiment. [Born ca. 1844 in South Carolina.]
