The Lyles Rifles were organized on November 13th, 1861, by James Henry Rion at Winnsboro, South Carolina, with volunteers from Fairfield District. Moving to Camp Hampton near Columbia, South Carolina, in early December 1861, they were mustered into Confederate service on December 9th, 1861, for the duration of the war. The company was temporarily attached to the Infantry Regiment, Holcombe Legion of South Carolina Volunteers, in December 1861, and was assigned to duty at Walter's Battery on Toogoodoo River, South Carolina, on December 29th. The company remained at the battery until February 2nd, 1862, when it moved to Pineburg, and was placed on picket duty. On February 22nd the company was assigned to the Seventh (7th) South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Battalion and ordered to join the battalion at Camp Cantey near Adams Run, South Carolina, joining them that day, they were designated as Company B.
Captain Rion remained in command of the company until April 1863 when he was promoted to Major of the battalion, and Lieutenant John R. Harrison was promoted to Captain. Harrison remained in command a short time before resigning in October 1863, and Lieutenant John L. Kennedy was promoted to the position. Kennedy would lead the men to Virginia, where he died of disease on August 8th, 1864, and Lieutenant Swanson W. Douglass was then promoted to Captain, however, on September 24th, 1864, he died as a result of wounds suffered on August 21st, 1864. Lieutenant John S. Tidwell was promoted to Captain in December 1864 to fill the vacancy, and he would led the company throughout the rest of their service. Temporarily consolidated with the rest of the brigade on March 10th, 1865, the remnants of the company were surrendered with the Army on April 26th, 1865, and paroled and disbanded on May 1st, 1865, at Greensboro, North Carolina.

The Moffatt Rifles were organized in May 1862 at Camp Cantey near Adams Run, South Carolina, by transferring the excess men from Companies B, C & D and adding new recruits, the men being largely drawn from Fairfield, Richland & Kershaw Districts. Completing the organization, the company was mustered into Confederate service on May 27th, 1862, at Company G of the Seventh (7th) South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Battalion, for the duration of the War. The company selected its name in honor of Lieutenant Keith Moffatt of Chester District who had served in the Palmetto Regiment of South Carolina Volunteers during the War with Mexico and had died of disease contracted in the service in 1848.
To lead the company the men elected Lieutenant William Clyburn of Company D as Captain. Captain Clyburn would led the men throughout their service, being wounded and captured on July 10th, 1863, in the fighting at Morris Island, he would be exchanged in March 1864 and rejoin the company in June. Temporarily consolidated with the rest of the brigade on March 10th, 1865, the remnants of the company were surrendered with the Army on April 26th, 1865, and paroled and disbanded on May 1st, 1865, at Greensboro, North Carolina.

In June 1862 John H. Brooks of Edgefield received authority from the Secretary of War to raise a Company of Partisan Rangers for active service, provided that he could so within thirty days. Going to work, Brooks had soon enrolled sufficient men from Edgefield District and reported at Camp Hampton near Columbia, South Carolina, where additional recruits were receiving from across the state, soon completing the organization of the Joe Johnston Rifles (also shown sometimes as the Johnston Rifles or Brooks Infantry), named in honor of General Joseph E. Johnston who had endorsed Brooks request to form the company. With their organization finalized the company was officially mustered into Confederate Service on July 14th, 1862, to serve for the duration of the war.
Initially intended to be an independent organization, upon their application, they were assigned to Seventh (7th) South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Battalion, and upon joining them at Camp Cantey near Adams Run on October 14th, 1862, they were designated as Company H. Captain Brooks would led the company throughout its service, being absent at various times, including in late 1864 when he was temporarily detailed to command "Brooks Battalion" made up of Union Prisoners of War who were willing to serve in the Confederate Army to escape life in Southern Prisoners. The battalion was disbanded in late December 1864, and Captain Brooks rejoined the company in North Carolina. Temporarily consolidated with the rest of the brigade on March 10th, 1865, the remnants of the company were surrendered with the Army on April 26th, 1865, and paroled and disbanded on May 1st, 1865, at Greensboro, North Carolina.
