December 1859: The "German Hussars" are organized with volunteers from Charleston District, South Carolina, as a Cavalry Company of the South Carolina State Militia. Upon it's organization it is assigned to the Squadron of Cavalry of the 4th Brigade, South Carolina State Militia.
December 1860 to April 1861: Served in the Operations in, and around, Charleston Harbor, South Carolina.
November 8th, 1861: The company is ordered out for active service, and sent to Sullivan's Island by order of General Richard DeTreville of the South Carolina State Militia.
November 8th, 1861, to July 20th, 1862: In camp, and on duty, at Sullivan's Island, South Carolina.
April 5th, 1862: The company is mustered into Confederate Service as the "German Hussars" (Captain Theodore Cordes Company of South Carolina Volunteers) for the period of twelve months service, unless sooner discharged, at Sullivan's Island, South Carolina.
July 20th, 1862: By order of General William S. Walker, PACS, the company moves from Sullivan's Island to James Island.
July 20th to August 21st, 1862: In camp, and on duty at James Island, South Carolina.
August 21st, 1862: The company is consolidated with the 8th South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Battalion, the "St. Peter's Guard" and the "Rebel Troop," to form the 3rd South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. In the new regiment the company is designated as Company G.
December 1860 to April 1862 - Squadron of Cavalry, Fourth Brigade, South Carolina State Militia
April to July 1862 - Sullivan's Island, Department of South Carolina, Georgia & Florida
July to August 1862 - (James Island) 3rd Military District of South Carolina, Department of South Carolina, Georgia & Florida
CAPTAIN
Cordes, Theodore: Of Charleston District. Enrolled and mustered into service as Captain of Cordes Company of Cavalry, South Carolina Militia (German Hussars) on November 8th, 1861, at Sullivan's Island, South Carolina; mustered out of State service with the company on April 5th, 1862, at Sullivan's Island, South Carolina. Enrolled and was mustered into service as Captain of Cordes Company of Cavalry, South Carolina Volunteers (German Hussars) on April 5th, 1862, at Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, for twelve months service; transferred with the company as Company G of the 3rd South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Regiment on August 21st, 1862; on a six-days leave of absence from June 26th, 1863; on a ten-days leave of absence from June 24th, 1864; tendered his resignation on June 5th, 1864, due to being "...over fifty-years of age and am too advanced in life to do effective duty in the field. I have a wife, six children and two grand-children almost entirely dependent upon me for support. My son who is the only male person to whom my family can look to for assistance of any kind is now seventeen years of age and is obliged to go into service...;" resignation was accepted, and he was honorably discharged, on June 23rd, 1864. [Born in Germany; died on April 7th, 1874, at Ridgeville, South Carolina.]

Campsen, John: Of Charleston District. Enlisted and was mustered into service as a Private in Company F of the Palmetto Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers, in 1846 for two years' service; wounded in action on August 20th, 1847, at Churubusco, Mexico; mustered out of service with the company in July 1848 at Mobile, Alabama. Enrolled and mustered into service as First Lieutenant of Cordes Company of Cavalry, South Carolina Militia (German Hussars) on November 8th, 1861, at Sullivan's Island, South Carolina; absent, on furlough in Europe, to December 31st, 1861; mustered out of State service with the company on April 5th, 1862, at Sullivan's Island, South Carolina. [Born in Bremen, Germany; died in May 1871 at Charleston, South Carolina; buried at Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston, Charleston County, South Carolina.]

Mehrtens, Rudolph: Of Charleston District. Enrolled and mustered into service as Second Lieutenant of Cordes Company of Cavalry, South Carolina Militia (German Hussars) on November 8th, 1861, at Sullivan's Island, South Carolina; absent, on a furlough, from December 24th, 1861, to January 3rd, 1862; mustered out of State service with the company on April 5th, 1862, at Sullivan's Island, South Carolina.

Bischoff, Henry: Enrolled and mustered into service as Junior Second Lieutenant of Cordes Company of Cavalry, South Carolina Militia (German Hussars) on November 8th, 1861, at Sullivan's Island, South Carolina; mustered out of State service with the company on April 5th, 1862, at Sullivan's Island, South Carolina. [Born on April 21st, 1821, in Heerstdet, Germany; died on October 6th, 1878, at Charleston, South Carolina; buried at the Bethany Cemetery in Charleston, Charleston County, South Carolina.]

Amme, C.: Enlisted and mustered into service as a Private in Cordes Company of Cavalry, South Carolina Militia (German Hussars) on November 8th, 1861, at Sullivan's Island, South Carolina; relieved from duty by order of Brigadier General Roswell S. Ripley, PACS, from November 25th to December 19th, 1861; no further record.
