May to June 1862: 3rd Military District of South Carolina, Department of South Carolina, Georgia & Florida
June to July 1862: 2nd Military District of South Carolina, Department of South Carolina, Georgia & Florida
September to December 1862: Unattached, Department of North Carolina and Southern Virginia
December 1862 to April 1863: Wise's Brigade, Elzey's Command, Department of North Carolina & Southern Virginia
April to September 1863: Wise's Brigade, Department of Richmond
September 1863 to March 1864: Hunton's Brigade, Department of Richmond
November 21st, 1861: The unit is organized with four (4) companies as the Cavalry Battalion of the Holcombe Legion, South Carolina Volunteers, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel William P. Shingler.
November 18th, 1861: The Claremont Cavalry is mustered into service as Company A at Charleston, South Carolina.
December 12th, 1861: The Congaree Cavaliers are mustered into service as Company B at Camp Hampton near Columbia, South Carolina.
December 17th, 1861: The Newberry Rangers are mustered into service as Company C at Camp Hampton near Columbia, South Carolina.
November 1861 to August 1862: Served in the defense of Coastal South Carolina.
March 29th, 1862: A detachment is engaged at Edisto Island, South Carolina.
April 8th, 1862: The Kirkwood's are assigned to the battalion and designated as Company E.
September 1862 to March 1864: Served in operations in, and around, Richmond & Petersburg in Southern Virginia.
July 1st & 2nd, 1863: Company D is engaged near Crumps Crossroads, Virginia.
August 27th, 1863: Company D is engaged at Bottom's Bridge, Virginia.
August 28th, 1863: Company D is engaged at New Kent Courthouse, Virginia.
March 18th, 1864: The battalion is consolidated with the Rutledge Mounted Riflemen (two companies), Marion's Men of Winyah (two companies), and one company from Boykins Squadron of Mounted Rifles and reorganized as the Seventh (7th) South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, per Special Order No. 65, Adjutant & Inspector General's Department, Richmond, Virginia.
Company A (Claremont Cavalry) is designated as Company I of the 7th Cavalry Regiment
Company B (Congaree Cavaliers) is designated as Company D of the 7th Cavalry Regiment
Company C (Newberry Rangers) is designated as Company E of the 7th Cavalry Regiment
Company D (McKissick Rangers) is designated as Company C of the 7th Cavalry Regiment
Company E (The Kirkwoods) is designated as Company H of the 7th Cavalry Regiment
