  BATTALION TIMELINE

 
July 23rd, 1862: The battalion is mustered into Confederate service with seven (7) companies as the Sixteenth (16th) South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Battalion, also being known as the Sixth (6th) Cavalry Battalion and Aiken's Partisan Rangers. Hugh Kerr Aiken of Fairfield District is appointed as Lieutenant Colonel of the battalion.

January 19th, 1863: The battalion is increased by the organization of three companies, raising it to the strength of a full regiment, and is reorganized as the Sixth (6th) South Carolina Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. The companies of the battalion were retained their company letters in the new organization.
