    The following historical information is about the service of both the regiment, and the men, of the First (1st) South Carolina Volunteer Artillery Battalion, which served in the American Civil War from March 1861 to March 1862.   BATTALION TIMELINE

 
February 6th, 1861: Organized by an Act of the South Carolina State Legislature as the Battalion of Artillery, South Carolina Regular Army, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Roswell Sabine Ripley.

March to April 1861: Served in the Operations in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina.

    April 12th to 13th, 1861: Engaged in the Bombardment of Fort Sumter.

May 17th to 24th, 1861: The Battalion is mustered into Confederate States service with five (5) companies as the First (1st) South Carolina Volunteer Artillery Battalion by Mustering Officer, Assistant Adjutant General, David Rumph Jones, at various posts around Charleston Harbor, South Carolina.

    May 17th, 1861: Wagner's Company (Company D) is mustered into service at Fort Moultrie, Sullivan's Island, South Carolina.

    May 18th, 1861: Calhoun's Company (Company A) is mustered into service at Fort Moultrie, Sullivan's Island, South Carolina.

    May 22nd, 1861: James' Company (Company C) is mustered into service at Fort Johnson, James Island, South Carolina.

    May 24th, 1861: Yates' Company (Company E) is mustered into service at Fort Moultrie, Sullivan's Island, South Carolina. Rhett's Company (Company B) is mustered into service at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina.

October 14th, 1861: King's Company (Company F) is mustered into service at Fort Sumter, Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, by Mustering Officer, Major, Thomas M. Wagner.

November 1st, 1861: Peronneau's Company (Company G) is mustered into service at Fort Moultrie, Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, by Mustering Officer, Major, Thomas M. Wagner.

February 5th, 1862: Company H is mustered into service at Fort Sumter, Charleston Harbor, South Carolina.

February 17th, 1862: Company I is mustered into service at Fort Sumter, Charleston Harbor, South Carolina.

March 25th, 1862: The battalion is increased to a full regiment, and is designated as the First (1st) Artillery Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers.
