  COMPANY HISTORY

The 'Zouave Light Guard' were organized in January 1861 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, under John Robison, who was elected as Captain. The company was easily filled and apparently was the source of some merriment and competition between itself and its fellow Cleveland Zouave Company – the "Sprague Zouave Cadets," as is reflected in the following article from the March 4th, 1861, edition of the 'Cleveland Morning Leader,' which were intended to mock the Rules adopted by the Sprague Zouave Cadets, and published in the previous edition of the newspaper:

"Rules of the Zouave Light Guards. The Zouave Light Guards, at a recent meeting, passed the following rules and resolutions unanimously:

Resolved, That from the date of these resolutions, the following acts shall be and are declared offenses against our organization, punishable by expulsion and publication in the Cleveland papers, the New York Ledger, and the Clipper, his business and pecuniary liabilities; also the name of his grandmother, and forfeiture of his uniform and equipment's and a clean shirt.

1st. Entering the house of a man who drinks liquor, or whose breath smells of liquor, whether he drinks it or not, or whose relations are in the habit of drinking liquor.

2d. Walking along any street where a house of ill fame is located, unless it can be proved that there ain't any such street.

3d. Winning large sums of money at "gambling," unless it is for the benefit of the poor.

4th. Entering any private room attached to any hotel or saloon unless accompanied by a clergyman of good standing.

5th. Playing marbles in the streets, or rolling ten pins, except in closets at home. Playing marbles is harmless in itself, but it leads folks to swear, and say naughty words. The Guards musn't say naughty words.

6th. It is the duty of each member to grow mustaches long enough to tie under his chin. Those who can't will be fined until they do.

7th. Sneezing on the streets is positively forbidden. No man who has any respect for himself will sneeze on the streets.

8th. As each member is supposed to be a gentleman, and as no gentleman will borrow another man's handkerchief, to blow his in, it is not considered necessary by the company to make any rule in that regard.

9th. No member will be guilty of picking his teeth in the streets. A tooth-picker engaged by the year to pick the teeth of the company may always be found at the Armory.

10th. Each member of the Company shall provide himself with a banner six feet by eight, inscribed with the name of the corps, which he shall carry on all occasions, so that the public may know that they are military soldiers, sometimes known as trainers.

12th. That these rules go into effect immediately, if not sooner.

            Capt. D'ROBISINO, Cemanderio.

After the adoption of the above rules, 136 members were proposed and unanimously elected, with the distinct understanding that the 8th commandment should be pasted in the crown of each man's hat for frequent reference, with the exception of the commandant and financial secretary, who are at liberty to do as they please.

It is to be presumed, of course, that the above stringent rules will lose us many members, but we are determined to enforce them, though we are reduced in consequence to three members.

Despite the jovial attitude, the secession of the Southern States resulted in renewed enthusiasm for service. On April 16th, 1861, a meeting was held at the company armory in the Atwater Building on Superior Street, and a vote taken to volunteer for active service, and the following day the enrollment of new recruits was begun and ended as soon as it started, as the necessary number was soon obtained, with many more waiting to see if any were rejected and could take their places. So many men had expressed an interest in joining that on April 22nd James P. McIlrath began organizing "Compamy B, Zouave Light Guard" and within one day had nearly filled their quota. To these two companies would later be added Company C, organizing under James Armstrong, in June 1861.

Of the original company, now designated Company A of the 'Zouave Light Guard,' the men elected as their Captain William R. Creighton, and on April 19th, having enlisted the necessary number of men, reported at Camp Taylor in Cleveland for active service. At the camp they were joined by other volunteers from throughout the State, and on the April 24th were joined by Company B under Captain McIlrath. On April 26th, a reporter from the 'Cleveland Morning Leader' visited the camp and wrote of the company that: "The police arrangement of this company is admirable. All day yesterday Captain Creighton had his men keep his quarters in order, which are the best and neatest on the ground. Capt. Creighton has a splendidly drilled company, and keeps them up to the mark the whole time. He is working his men hard, but in this he does not spare himself, for he has nearly made himself sick by his energetic exertions to make his corps the best on the ground. He is a great favorite with all, especially the ladies...Capt. Creighton and all his officers deserve great praise for the care they take of their command, and then men show their appreciation by obeying orders promptly and rapidly, with that precision which characterizes the true soldier."

With the basic organization, training, equipping, etc., completed the company was officially mustered into United States service as Company A of the 7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment for three months' service on April 29th, 1861, at Camp Taylor by Captain J.H. Simpson of the U.S. Army Topographical Engineers. On May 5th, the men bade farewell to their sister company (B), who were to become Company A of the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, and moved with the regiment to Camp Dennison near Cincinnati. From there they would share in the marches, campaigns and battles of the 7th Ohio throughout the remainder of their service. On June 19th, 1861, it being understood that the war was going to last longer than three months, the matter of re-enlisting was put to the men; of the ninety-nine (99) men on the rolls fifty-one (51) re-enlisted for three years' service, and to those were added new recruits and transfers from other companies; by the wars end there would be carried on the rolls of the company a total of one-hundred and ninety-four (194) names.

On August 22nd, 1861, the forty-six (46) members of the company who had not re-enlisted were mustered out of service at Columbus, Ohio, and received their discharges a few days later at the armory of the 'Zouave Light Guard' in Cleveland. These discharged men were not to remain long at home, as while their comrades were on furlough for re-enlisting that June, Sergeant Frank Lynch of the 'Zouave Light Guard' had begun organizing several members of both the Guard and the 'Sprauge Zouave Cadets' into a new company that would volunteer for active service as soon as they were discharged. This new company would be known as the 'Creighton Zouaves' in honor of Captain William R. Creighton, then serving as Lieutenant Colonel of the 7th Ohio Infantry Regiment, and would be mustered into United States service as Company G of the 27th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment in August 1861.

The rest of the company would continue its service until June 1864 when orders were received to prepare the regiment to be mustered out of service as the date of the expiration of their term of service approached. On June 8th, 1864, the twenty-two (22) members whose terms were not set to expire were transferred, along with the other members of the regiment whose terms were not up, to the 5th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment to complete their service. The remaining members returned with the regiment to Ohio, where on July 6th, 1864, the company was officially mustered out of United States service at Cleveland, the men returning to their homes, some remaining at home for the last few months of the war, while others soon volunteered again for active service with other companies.
