  COMPANY HISTORY

The "Janesville City Zouaves" began their organization shortly after the passage of the Wisconsin Militia Laws in June 1861, as a company of the State Militia. Formed from volunteers in the town of Janesville, Rock County, the men were organized under the leadership of George G. Williams (1838-1911), who was elected as the company's first captain; the other early officers of the company included - Lieutenants J.S. Murray, George C. Brown and J.W. Hall: Sergeants Edwin E. Woodman, G.F. True, John Hutson and William M. Burns and Corporals Hiram Nash, H.B. Williams, Andrew Palmer Jr. and W.R. Graham. The first several months of the company's existence were spent in obtaining uniforms and equipment and in regular drills to prepare the men for future service.

In early September 1861 with the calling up of additional volunteers, a meeting of the company was held, during which time Sergeant Edwin E. Woodman was elected as Captain and it was decided to volunteer for active service. Recruiting began on September 9th and the within a short time the necessary numbers soon being recruited the men reported for duty at Camp Tredway in Janesville. Completing the necessary examinations, the company was officially mustered into United States service on October 17th, 1861, for the period of three years' service under Captain Edwin E. Woodman, 1st Lieutenant James L. Murray and 2nd Lieutenant George C. Brown.

Serving with the regiment in its various campaigns and marches, as the men's original term of enlistment of three years drew near a large number of the company re-enlisted in December 1863 for the duration of the war. The newly enlisted veteran volunteers returned home on their veteran furlough in February 1864, and rejoined their comrades at the end of March, that November 19th those men who had not reenlisted and whose terms were expiring were mustered out of service at Huntsville, Alabama, and returned home. The veteran company continued in the service with the regiment, and in 1865 travelled west to Texas for reconstruction duty in that state, it was at the regimental camp outside of San Antonio, Texas, that the regiment was officially mustered out of United States service on November 24th, 1865. The regiment travelled from San Antonio to Indianola, Texas, where they boarded transports which carried them through New Orleans, Louisiana, up the Mississippi River to Madison, Wisconsin, where on December 26th, 1865, the men of the company, and regiment, were officially disbanded.
