  COMPANY HISTORY

The "Fox River Zouaves" began their organization in August 1861 in the town of Berlin, Green Lake County, Wisconsin, under the guidance of DeWitt C. Benham. At some point the company was joined with a group from the nearby town of Markesan under Allen J. Whitter, who was designated as Captain of the consolidated company, Benham accepting the position of First Lieutenant. Reaching the required number of recruits the company reported at Camp Randall in Madison, and on October 18th, 1861, were mustered into United States service as Company I of the 11th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment for three years' service.

Serving with the regiment in its campaigns and marches throughout the Western Theater, the men's original term of service came near its expiration in 1864, and the men re-enlisted on February 11th, 1864, as veteran volunteers for the duration of the war. As part of their reenlistment the men were entitled to a thirty-day veteran furlough, leaving in February for Wisconsin, those members who had not re-enlisted or whose terms were not due to expire were temporarily attached to the 23rd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Upon the return of these men in April the detached men rejoined their comrades. That November, those men who had not re-enlisted and whose terms were expired, returned to Wisconsin and were mustered out of service. With the wars end the men of the company found themselves on reconstruction duty in Alabama, where on July 22nd, 1865, the company received several new additions when the men from the 33rd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment whose terms of service had not yet expired were transferred into the company.

The company would continue in the service with the regiment until September 4th, 1865, when they were officially mustered out of United States service at Mobile, Alabama. Returning to Wisconsin, the men arrived at Madison on September 18th, and were officially disbanded as a regiment, and company.
