  COMPANY HISTORY

The "Harvey Zouaves" were organized in October 1861 by the consolidation of the "Baraboo Rangers" and the "Dane County Zouaves," both organized with volunteers from Dane County, Wisconsin. The two companies had begun organizing in September 1861, and had shortly thereafter reported at Camp Randall in Madison, however, as the date for mustering drew nearer neither had successfully recruited sufficient members. It was decided in October to consolidated the two companies together, and on October 2nd, 1861, this was done and the company was re-designated as the "Harvey Zouaves," in honor of Wisconsin Secretary of State Louis Powell Harvey (1820-1862), who would shortly thereafter be elected as Governor.

With the consolidation completed, the company was officially mustered into United States service, for the period of three years' service, on October 18th, 1861, at Camp Randall under the command of Captain Edward R. Chase, 1st Lieutenant Fernando D. Stone and 2nd Lieutenant Riel E. Jackson.

Secretary Harvey's wife, Mrs. Cordelia A.P. Harvey (1824-1895), took a particular interest in the company and prior to their departure from Camp Randall, a presentation was made by her and her husband to the men of the Company, the following was reported in the local papers: "Mrs. Harvey lately presented a bible and testament to each private of the Harvey Zouaves; a revolver to Capt. Chase, and the Lieutenants with knives and forks. Secretary Harvey made the presentation in appropriate remarks, and Rev. L. B. Mason suitably responded on behalf of the company. From what we hear the Zouaves say, they are well pleased with the gift, and regard it highly. Besides finding in the bible much historical knowledge that every one should know, they will learn saving maxims and apt quotations which have been inestimable value to Gov. Randall and others. It can be truly said of this unrivalled book that it excels all in variety of reading, in beauty of thought, in sublimity of conception, and in wise instructions for living honorably and prosperously, which are as pertinent to the present as they were when the inspired Ecclesiastes wrote them."

Serving with the regiment in its campaigns and marches throughout the Western Theater, the men's original term of service came near its expiration in 1864, and the men re-enlisted on February 11th, 1864, as veteran volunteers for the duration of the war. As part of their reenlistment the men were entitled to a thirty-day veteran furlough, leaving in February for Wisconsin, those members who had not re-enlisted or whose terms were not due to expire were temporarily attached to the 23rd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Upon the return of these men in April the detached men rejoined their comrades. That November, those men who had not re-enlisted and whose terms were expired, returned to Wisconsin and were mustered out of service. With the wars end the men of the company found themselves on reconstruction duty in Alabama, where on July 22nd, 1865, the company received several new additions when the men from the 33rd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment whose terms of service had not yet expired were transferred into the company.

The company would continue in the service with the regiment until September 4th, 1865, when they were officially mustered out of United States service at Mobile, Alabama. Returning to Wisconsin, the men arrived at Madison on September 18th, and were officially disbanded as a regiment, and company.
