  COMPANY HISTORY

The "Union Zouaves" were originally organized at Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania, in early 1861 as a home guard unit by Captain John E. Arthur, a veteran of the Mexican War. When the call for three year volunteers was made the company responded, filling up with recruits from Reading, Womelsdorf and Bernville. Reaching their quota the company left Reading on September 21st, 1861, for Camp Coleman near Lebanon, Pennsylvania, to join the newly organizing regiment at that place. The company was officially mustered into United States service as Company B of the Ninety-Third (93rd) Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment on October 12th, 1861 (sometimes shown as October 2nd).

Serving with the regiment throughout first three years, the balance of the company re-enlisted for the duration of the war on February 7th, 1864. Continuing in the campaigns and marches of the regiment, the company was mustered out of United States service with the regiment on June 27th, 1865, at Washington, D.C.
