The "Neversink Zouaves" (sometimes referred to as the "Neversink Fire Zouaves") began organizing in late August 1861, under Henry A. Myers in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Recruiting moved quickly and by September 10th, 1861, the company was almost fully recruited. Departing for the regimental rendezvous at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on September 11th, they reported shortly thereafter and underwent medical examinations, those unfit being rejected with new recruits quickly taking their places. From September 13th to 18th the company was officially mustered into United States service as Company B of the Eighty-Eight (88th) Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment, United States Volunteers, for the period of three years' service.
Serving with the regiment throughout its campaigns and marches, the company, under the command of 1st Lieutenant Albert Nagle, was mustered out of United States service, with the regiment, on June 30th, 1865, at Washington, D.C.
