The "Junior Fire Zouaves" were organized by George W. Knabb in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Reporting to the regimental encampment near Philadelphia, the company was mustered into United States service on August 23rd, 1861, as Company A of the Eighty-Eighth (88th) Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment, for three years' service under the command of Captain Knabb.
Serving with the regiment throughout its campaigns and marches, the company was mustered out of service with the regiment on June 30th, 1865, at Washington, D.C., then being under the command of First Lieutenant Daniel W. Ney.

Foust, Benezet Forst: Mustered into service as Regimental Adjutant, with the rank of First Lieutenant, of the 88th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment on September 10th, 1861, for three years' service; promoted to Captain of Company A on November 28th, 1862; promoted to Major on December 31st, 1862; wounded in action on July 1st, 1863, at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania; transferred to the 9th Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps, on November 6th, 1863; promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of the 10th Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps, on June 20th, 1864; brevetted to the rank of Brigadier General of United States Volunteers on March 13th, 1865, for “gallant and meritorious services during the War;” mustered out of service with the regiment on November 28th, 1865.
