COMPANY F, SEVENTH (7TH) PENNSYLVANIA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY REGIMENT
The following historical information is about the service of the "Pennsylvania Zouaves" - Company F of the Seventh (7th) Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment, U.S. Volunteers, which served in the American Civil War from April 23rd to July 29th, 1861. The "Pennsylvania Zouaves" were organized in early 1861 in Pittsburg, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, by Captain Joseph Gerard, who was supposed to have served in the French Army prior to immigrating to America. According to the "Standard History of Pittsburg," Gerard, "...complained of the discourtesy of Colonel Ellsworth in not consenting to a trial of skill between the two commands in the use of the musket and the sword." Answering the call for volunteers, the company reported at Camp Curtin near Harrisburg, and were mustered into United States service as Company F of the Seventh (7th) Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment on April 22nd, 1861, for three months service. Serving with the regiment, the men were mustered out of United States service on July 29th, 1861, at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
