  COMPANY HISTORY

The company began its organization as a Cadet Military Company in November 1861 at Lancaster, Pennsylvania, through the efforts of George F. Sprenger. Obtaining the use of the State Militia Armory at the Mechanics Hall, the company was soon designated as the "First City Zouaves" (sometimes shown as the "Lancaster Zouaves") with the men selecting T. Hall Foreman as their Captain, S.B. Markley as First Lieutenant and David K. Springer as Second Lieutenant. Composed largely of young men, recruiting and organization progressed until on April 1st, 1862, they had recruited enough members to be ready for active military service.

Lacking funds for uniforms, equipment, the men set to work to raise the necessary funds to and on April 8th, 1862, held a benefit ball at Fulton Hall in Lancaster to raise funds, through their hard work by July 4th the company was parading in full Zouave uniform with fifty-six officers and men for the towns Independence Day Celebrations. On July 6th, 1862, the company was reorganized and renamed as the "Schaeffer Zouaves" in honor of General Bartram A. Schaeffer of the Pennsylvania State Militia, the name change was the result of the efforts of General Schaeffer to assist the company in obtaining their arms and equipment and done as a sign of respect for those efforts. It was at this same time that the company officer elections were held, with William F. Duncan elected as Captain, David K. Springer as First Lieutenant and Lieutenant Emanuel Dorwart as Second Lieutenant.

Within days of this reorganization, the company volunteered its services in response to a call from the Governor and President, on July 12th, 1862, for volunteers for nine months service, and on August 12th, 1862, they were officially mustered into United States service as Company K of the One Hundred and Twenty-second (122) Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment for nine-months service. The company served with the regiment throughout its term of service, taking part in the defenses of Washington, D.C., before being attached to the 3rd Division, 3rd Corps, Army of the Potomac and taking part in the Chancellorsville Campaign. With the expiration of their term of service, the regiment moved to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and were officially mustered out of United States service on May 15th, 1863.

Following their discharge and return home the company was disbanded, with the members returning to active service with other organizations for the remainder of the war.

  UNIFORM

From November 1861 to April 1862 the company most likely wore their civilian clothing as their Zouave dress had not yet been determined. Following the April 1862 benefit sufficient funds were raised to adopt the Zouave dress, the uniform was produced by local tailor J.K. Smaling of Lancaster and was described by Sergeant George F. Sprenger as being "...a very handsome blue uniform, neatly finished with becoming red trimmings, as also leggings and other accompaniments similar to that which characterized the attire of Colonel Duryea' s famous New York Fire Zouaves during the war."

Upon entering Federal service in August 1862, the question of if the company continued to wear their Zouave uniform in the field is being researched in more detail. However, there are two images of members of the company, one (at right) is of Private George W. Clinton in the Zouave uniform that matches Sergeant Sprenger's description, while another published in the regimental history show Sergeant Sprenger in the Regulation U.S. Army frock coat. It is most likely that the Zouave uniform was left at home upon the company preparing to leave the State and was not used in the field, or if it was retained, it was only brought out as a dress uniform during their service.
