  COMPANY HISTORY

The 'Cincinnati Zouave Guard,' sometimes referred to as the 'Zouave Guards,' trace their origins back to the visit of Elmer E. Ellsworth and his 'United States Zouave Cadets' to Cincinnati, Ohio, in July 1860. Within a few days of their departure the local papers reported that "...of the visit of the Zouaves in Cincinnati. It shows in what estimation this style of military men are held by the people, and we commend it to those of our citizens who are disposed to organize a company here on the same principles..." By March 1861 recruiting and organization had been so successful that the command was shown as organized with two companies (A and B), and under the command of Major Henry G. Kennett (later Colonel of the 79th Ohio Infantry Regiment), and were taking part in the regular duties of the Ohio Militia, as well as putting on exhibition drills and demonstrations for the public benefit.

With the calling up of volunteers in April 1861 both companies volunteered for active service, Company A (under James Baldwin) joining the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment and Company B (under Alonzo Horton) the 5th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Captain Horton and the men Company B of the 'Cincinnati Zouave Guard' enlisted on April 20th, 1861, for three months, and reporting to camp were mustered into United States service on May 9th, 1861, at Company G of the Fifth (5th) Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, for the period of three months' service. At the time of their being mustered into service the company consisted of eighty-six (86) officers and men under Captain Alonzo Horton, 1st Lieutenant Waldo C. Booth and 2nd Lieutenant Frederick W. Moore. While still at Camp Denison the question of reenlisting for three years' service was put to the men, and on June 5th, 1861, forty-eight (48) members of the company re-enlisted; those who did not were mustered out of service in August and September at Columbus. To bring the company back up to strength fifty-nine (59) new recruits were enlisted, some were three months men from other companies, some from other regiments and some new men; and when mustered for three years' service on June 20th, 1861, the company numbered one hundred and seven (107) officers and men.

Serving with the regiment throughout its campaigns and marches, the company's three years' term drew near an end and on June 20th, 1864, those whose terms had expired were mustered out of service. The handful of remaining members were joined on June 8th by transfers from the 7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment whose terms had not yet expired filling the company back up, and serving until the end of the War. The company was officially mustered out of service with the regiment on July 26th, 1865, at Louisville, Kentucky, with thirty-four (34) officers and men under the command of 1st Lieutenant Albert M. Tousley, who had joined the company in June 1864. Of the original 1861 members of the company only one remained with the command until the end, Corporal Henry Eichler had enlisted on April 20th, 1861, and served throughout the war with the company before being wounded, he was discharged from the service on July 26th, 1865.

During the company's term of service there were carried on the rolls the names of two-hundred and thirty-five (235) officers and men. Of these eighty-six (86) composed the original company, to this were added seventy-three (73) various recruits and transfers, and on June 8th, 1864, seventy-six (76) men from the 7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, whose terms of service were unexpired. Of that number ninety-eight (98) were discharged (5 general discharges, 7 to re-enlist, 4 to accept commissions, 21 for disability, 59 per orders, 2 for being underage), six (6) resigned, six (6) were promoted, twenty-five (25) were transferred and eleven (11) had no further record. Fourteen (14) men died while in service (1 of unknown causes, 4 of wounds, 8 were killed in action and 1 by accident). Seventy-five (75) men were mustered out of service from the company; twenty-seven (27) in August and September 1861, fourteen (14) in June 1864 upon the expiration of their terms of service, and thirty-four (34) with the company when it was mustered out of service in July 1865.
