  COMPANY HISTORY

The "Giddings Zouaves" first began their organization in early May 1861 in Ashtabula, Ashtabula County, Ohio, by Grotius R. Giddings. Within several days of enrolling members, the company's rolls were filled, on May 22nd, 1861, at a meeting of the company the officers were elected, G.R. Giddings being selected as Captain, with Carlos A. Sperry as First Lieutenant and William W. Shepherd as Second Lieutenant. Additional recruiting parties were easily able to enlist the last remaining recruits, and when the requisite number had been recruited the company volunteered their services for active duty. Being accepted by the Governor, the company moved to Camp Jackson near Columbus, Ohio, where, after passing all the necessary medical examinations, they were officially mustered into United States service for three years' service on June 2nd, 1861, by Captain John C. Robinson of the 5th U.S. Infantry Regiment. The company was designated as Company B of the Twenty-Third Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, numbering at that time three (3) officers and eight-six (86) enlisted men under the command of Captain Grotius R. Giddings, 1st Lieutenant Carlos A. Sperry and 2nd Lieutenant William W. Shepherd. Captain Giddings remained with the company only a short time, as on July 23rd, 1861, he was discharged to accept a commission as Major of the 14th U.S. Infantry Regiment, and Lieutenant Sperry was promoted to Captain in his place, he would lead the men throughout most of their service before being mustered out in June 1864.

The company would serve with the regiment throughout its marches, campaigns and battles, and in early 1864, as the expiration of their original three years' term of enlistment drew near, a call to re-enlist was made, to which around forty-nine (49) of the members responded by re-enlisting for the duration of the war. Continuing their service with the regiment, the company was officially mustered out of United States service on July 26th, 1865, at Cumberland, Maryland, by Captain A.F. Kendall of the 91st Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment; at the time it numbered sixty-six (65) officers and men under the command of Captain Charles H. Morgan.

During their term of service the rolls of the company would have entered upon them the names of one-hundred and ninety-four (194) officers and men; of these eight-nine (89) were the original members mustered into service on June 2nd, 1861, to which were added the names of one-hundred and five (105) new recruits or men transferring into the company. Of these sixty-six (66) would be mustered out of service with the company on July 26th, 1865, the company having lost during its service one-hundred and twenty-eight (128) men as follows: one (1) resigned, seven (7) were promoted, five (5) were discharged to accept commissions, nineteen (19) were transferred out of the company, two (2) were mustered out of service upon the expiration of their original term of service, twenty-three (23) were discharged per orders, twenty-four (24) were discharged due to disability, two (2) were discharged for unknown causes, one (1) was discharged per civil authority, sixteen (16) had no further record and twenty-eight (28) died while in service (11 killed in action, 2 died of wounds, 9 died of unknown causes, 5 died as prisoners of war and 1 was missing in action and presumed dead).
