  COMPANY HISTORY

The "Zouave Light Guard" were organized in January 1861 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, under John Robison, who was elected as Captain of the Corps. With the secession of the Southern States came a renewed enthusiasm and interest in military service, as such militia units soon began to grow quickly. On April 16th, 1861, a meeting was held at the company armory in the Atwater Building on Superior Street, and a vote taken to volunteer for active service, and the following day the enrollment of new recruits was begun and ended as soon as it started, as the necessary number was soon obtained, with many more waiting to see if any were rejected and could take their places. So many men had expressed an interest in joining that on April 22nd James P. McIlrath began organizing Company B of the 'Zouave Light Guard' and within one day had nearly filled their quota. To these two companies would later be added Company C, organizing under James Armstrong, in June 1861.

Upon opening the enrollment books of Company B of the 'Zouave Light Guard' on April 22nd, 1861, Captain McIlrath had initially only twenty-five (25) men on the rolls, however, by the end of the day and additional thirty (38) had enlisted. The company was quickly and reported at Camp Taylor for active service, on April 26th the 'Cleveland Morning Leader' reported that the company was "...improving rapidly in drill, and made a fine appearance yesterday in their white blanket uniforms. They also keep their quarters in excellent order, and are deserving of praise..."

Volunteering their services for active duty, the company was accepted by the Governor, and moved to Camp Jackson near Columbus, Ohio, in May 1861. After passing all the necessary medical examinations, they were officially mustered into United States service for three years' service on June 11th, 1861, by Captain John C. Robinson of the 5th U.S. Infantry Regiment. The company was designated as Company A of the Twenty-Third Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, numbering at that time three (3) officers and ninety-six (96) enlisted men under the command of Captain James P. McIlrath, 1st Lieutenant Wallis J. Woodward and 2nd Lieutenant John F. Wall.

The company would serve with the regiment throughout its marches, campaigns and battles, and in early 1864, as the expiration of their original three years' term of enlistment drew near, a call to re-enlist was made, to which around thirty-seven (37) of the members responded by re-enlisting for the duration of the war. Continuing their service with the regiment, the company was officially mustered out of United States service on July 26th, 1865, at Cumberland, Maryland, by Captain A.F. Kendall of the 91st Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment; at the time it numbered sixty-three (63) officers and men under the command of Captain Eugene Clark.

From May 1861 to July 1865 there would be entered upon the rolls of the company the names of two-hundred and eleven (211) officers and men; of these ninety-nine (99) were the original members mustered into service on June 11th, 1861, to which were added the names of one-hundred and twelve (112) men who were new recruits or men transferring into the company from other companies or regiments. Of these sixty-three (63) would be mustered out of service with the company on July 26th, 1865, the company having lost during its service one-hundred and forty-eight (148) men as follows: one (1) resigned, eighteen (18) were promoted, four (4) were discharged to accept commissions, two (2) were discharged to re-enlist in other units, twenty-two (22) were transferred out of the company, eleven (11) were mustered out of service upon the expiration of their original term of service, sixteen (16) were discharged per orders, twenty-five (25) were discharged due to disability, four (4) were discharged for unknown causes, eighteen (18) had no further record and twenty-seven (27) died while in service (12 killed in action, 1 died of wounds, 7 died of unknown causes, 2 drowned and 5 died as prisoners of war).

  UNIFORM

Despite the fact that the 'Zouave Light Guard' as a whole had adopted a Zouave uniform, it is unlikely that Captain McIlrath's Company B was able to obtain it given the short time between its formation and entrance into active service. The only report of their early war uniform comes from the April 26th, 1861, edition of the 'Cleveland Morning Leader' which stated that:

"Company B, Capt. McIllrath, is improving rapidly in drill, and made a fine appearance yesterday in their white blanket uniforms. They also keep their quarters in excellent order, and are deserving of praise."

As with most early war Zouave companies, after their initial months of service the uniform was quickly traded out for the regulation of the remainder of the regiment.
