  COMPANY HISTORY

The "Rockford Zouaves" were organized in December of 1860 under the guidance of Garrett Nevius, personal friend of E. Elmer Ellsworth who provided support in the efforts to organize the company of which several members had received previous instruction from him when members of the Rockford City Grays, and several others of a like mind in the town of Rockford, Winnebago County, Illinois.

The origins of the company can be traced back to a Wide-Awake marching club (A pro-Lincoln political organization) that had been previously organized by Mr. Nevius in Rockford, and upon the conclusion of the election rather than disbanded they decided to reorganize themselves as a militia organization. The first meeting was held on December 26th, 1860, at Mr. Nevius photograph gallery in Rockford and the first steps were taken towards the organization, which was effected on January 3rd, 1861 when they were formally organized. It was at that time that the officers were chosen as follows, Captain - Garrett Nevius, First Lieutenant - R.A. Bird, Second Lieutenant - William D.E. Andrus, and Ensign - R.S. Norman. Meetings and drills were at once organized and held throughout the coming weeks, and on February 2nd, 1861, the South Rockford Band was admitted to membership and became the official band of the company.

With the calling up of volunteers to preserve the Union the company immediately volunteered for service, and was enlisted to its full strength for three months service on April 24th, 1861, at Rockford, Illinois, under the command of Captain Garrett Nevius. The company left from Rockford that day and reported to Camp of Instruction at Springfield, Illinois, where following medical examinations they were mustered into United States service as Company D of the 11th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment, commanded by Colonel William H.L. Wallace, for the term of three months service. The company served its three months with the regiment performing various guard and picket duty, and on July 30th, 1861, they were mustered out of service with the remainder of the regiment at Villa Ridge, Illinois. The company was immediately reorganized, however many of the original members departed and either returned home or joined new regiments that were forming, and throughout the months of July, August, & September members were mustered into service for three years service under the command of Captain William D.E. Andrus, who had been promoted upon the election of Captain Nevius as Major of the regiment. The company served throughout the campaigns of the 11th Regiment and suffered many losses, in April of 1863 some of these losses were replaced when members of Companies F & I of the 109th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment (which was being disbanded due to poor performance and mass desertions with the regiment) and brought the company back up to a respectable strength. In July of 1864 the company's three years enlistments expired and many men, including Captain Andrus, were discharged and returned home, the company continued its service under its final commander Captain Ira Beddo. The company was mustered out of United States service, along with the rest of the regiment, on July 14th, 1865, at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and from there the men returned to Illinois and then resumed their lives.
