The "Tittel Zouaves" was organized as a company of the California State Militia on July 23rd, 1864, and recruited its members largely from the German population of San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. The company chose to name itself the "Tittel Zouaves" in honor of Mexican War Veteran and Colonel Frederick G.E. Tittel of the 6th Regiment of Infantry, California State Militia, who presided over the organizational meeting of the company, which was soon to be attached to his regiment. After completing their organization the company was mustered into State service as Company I of the 6th Regiment of Infantry, 2nd Brigade, California State Militia, with John Sneider serving as the Captain of the Company.
The company served with the 6th Regiment for the remainder of its existence, taking part in the various drills, parades, and other activities of the regiment and brigade, from 1864 to 1866. In 1866 the State legislature passed a bill re-organizing the California State Militia and designating it as the National Guard of California. As part of this re-organization several companies, battalions, and regiments were mustered out of the state service and disbanded. On July 24th, 1866, the company was mustered along with the remainder of the 6th (German) Regiment of Infantry for its final inspection and to take account of all property, following the inspection of the men, books, and equipment, the company was officially mustered out of state service and disbanded.
