  COMPANY HISTORY

In August and September 1863, George T. Headen undertook to recruit and organize a military company at Santa Clara, Santa Clara County, California, and through his efforts on September 5th, 1863, the "Santa Clara Zouaves" were organized as part of the California State Militia. The men elected Headen as Captain, Charles Silent as First Lieutenant, Antonio F. Harlow as Senior Second Lieutenant and Theodore R. Clarke as Junior Second Lieutenant, following the election Captain Headen reported in writing to the Adjutant General and the company was assigned to duty as an unattached company of the Second (2nd) Brigade. From 1863 to 1865 the company served on the regular routine of Militia duty, taking part in patrols, assisting the civil authorities, marching in parades and drilling.

Despite the enthusiasm with which the company was formed, the interested soon slackened, and as the end of the American Civil War drew near the company was officially disbanded on April 3rd, 1865, per Special Order No. 26 of the Adjutant General's Office in Sacramento, California.
